FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Additional Information

WHAT IS THE SPAUT?

The Spaut is a unique, welcoming space designed for adults—especially those with high-functioning autism or mild intellectual disabilities—who live independently and want a safe place to relax, hang out, be creative, and build friendships. We offer activities like art, games, light exercise, and social events.

ARE YOU SIMILAR TO A DAYCARE PROGRAM?

No. The Spaut is not a day program, medical facility, or therapy center. We are a social recreation space designed for independent adults who want connection, creativity, and community.

DO YOU OFFER STRUCTURED CLASSES OR IS IT JUST DROP-IN?

We offer both! Members can drop in to enjoy games, art, and social time—or participate in scheduled classes like art workshops, and social groups. You'll get access to a calendar of events each month.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ATTEND THE SPAUT?

To be considered for membership, you must meet at least one of the following:

  • Be a client receiving Independent Living Services (ILS)

  • Be a client who lives independently, OR

  • Be a respectful and supportive individual who aligns with the inclusive and welcoming culture of the space

This is the first step in the process. All potential members must complete a screening, and admission is not guaranteed. Our goal is to ensure that everyone in the space contributes to a positive and safe environment for all. Our staff are trained to support social engagement, manage group dynamics, and offer assistance during activities. However, we are not a supervised care facility. Members must be able to manage their personal needs independently.

CAN I SIGN UP MY ELDERLY PARENT?

Yes, older adults with intellectual disabilities are eligible to attend the Spaut). However, it's important to note that we are NOT a daycare program. Our services are not designed to support individuals with primary needs stemming from age-related conditions such as dementia, severe physical disabilities, or those requiring extensive personal care. Our focus is on empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to achieve greater independence in their daily lives and community engagement.

I AM NOT NEURODIVERGENT. CAN I ATTEND?

Absolutely—with a few caveats. We welcome anyone who is kind, respectful, and open to being part of a diverse and inclusive community. While The Spaut was designed with neurodivergent adults in mind,  we also value and celebrate friendly allies who enrich our space through shared activities and positive interaction.

DO YOU OFFER TRANSPORTATION?

Members are responsible for their own transportation. The Spaut is accessible via public transit, and we’re happy to help you plan your route if needed.

HOW MUCH DOES MEMBERSHIP COST?

Membership plans vary depending on your needs. To learn more about current rates and available plans, please contact our Membership Coordinator—we’ll be happy to walk you through your options.
