Eligibility FAQ
Q. Who is The Spaut designed for?
A. The Spaut is designed primarily for adults with mild intellectual disabilities or high-functioning autism who live relatively independently. We also welcome neurodivergent-friendly members who want to participate respectfully in our community.
Q. Can I sign up my elderly parent?
A. Yes, older adults with intellectual disabilities are eligible to attend The Spaut. However, we are not a daycare program. Our services are not designed for individuals whose primary needs stem from dementia, severe physical disabilities, or extensive personal care. We focus on supporting adults with intellectual disabilities who want opportunities for socialization, independence, and community engagement.
Q. I am not neurodivergent. Can I attend?
A. Absolutely—with a few caveats. We welcome anyone who is kind, respectful, and open to being part of a diverse community. While The Spaut was designed with neurodivergent adults in mind, we also value friendly allies who enrich our space through shared activities and positive interaction.
Q. Are you similar to a daycare program?
A. No. The Spaut is not a daycare, medical facility, or therapy program. We are a social recreation space designed for independent adults who want connection, creativity, and community.
Programming FAQ
Q. Do you offer structured classes, or is it just drop-in?
A. We offer both! Members can drop in for gaming, art, or social time—or join scheduled classes like art workshops, social groups, and wellness activities. Each month, members receive a calendar of events.
Q. What kinds of activities are available?
A. Members can enjoy drop-in access to art, gaming, music, and social areas, along with scheduled classes and workshops such as cooking, social skills, or wellness activities. A calendar of events is updated monthly, and special events are hosted throughout the year.
Q. Can members lead activities?
A. Yes. As members gain confidence and skills, they are encouraged to take on leadership roles in workshops, classes, or events, helping to build independence and strengthen our community.
Safety FAQ
Q. Is The Spaut safe?
A. Yes. Our space includes supportive staff, clear behavioral expectations, and security measures to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
Q. Can I drop off my adult son or daughter and leave them at The Spaut?
A. Yes, but only if they meet our independence requirement. All members must be able to come and go on their own and participate without one-on-one supervision. The Spaut is not a daycare or custodial program, and staff are not responsible for providing continuous supervision. Our role is to support activities and ensure a safe, welcoming environment, but members are expected to manage themselves independently while in the space.
Q. Are staff always with members?
A. No. The Spaut is not a supervised day program. Members must be able to come and go on their own. Staff are present to support activities, encourage socialization, and ensure safety, but they do not provide one-on-one care.
