A Social Recreation Center for Adults with Mild Intellectual Disabilities

Our Spaut
At The Spaut, we’ve created an environment that feels like yours—comfortable, fun, and designed with social connection in mind. Every corner of our center is intentionally designed to support independent adults with mild intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering the freedom to participate, explore, and unwind in a welcoming, non-clinical setting.
Why The Spaut Exists
The Spaut represents more than a social center—it’s a shift in how communities understand and support neurodivergent individuals. Too often, society is built for the neurotypical majority, leaving those who experience the world differently to adapt to environments not designed with them in mind. This creates invisible barriers that can leave neurodivergent adults feeling like outsiders, despite being active, contributing members of their communities.
At The Spaut, we reverse that dynamic. Instead of asking members to adapt to the world, we built a world designed with them in mind—one that welcomes, values, and celebrates their presence. Here, differences are not limitations; they are part of what makes our community strong.
The Origin Story
The idea for The Spaut began with us providing independent living services for adults with mild intellectual disabilities. While supporting clients, one need stood out again and again—loneliness. Despite their talents, humor, and generosity, many clients struggled to find places where they could build lasting friendships.
Existing programs weren’t meeting the need. Most catered to children, leaving adults without appropriate options. Public programs often increased feelings of isolation, and traditional disability programs used a one-size-fits-all approach that didn’t match the independence or abilities of higher-functioning adults. Our clients wanted more—they wanted real community.
This inspired The Spaut: a space designed not as a clinic or day program, but as a community hub where adults can socialize, create, and thrive. Even the name itself—blending Spot with Autism—reflects the vision: a place to gather, belong, and be understood.
